Type K copper plumbing tube is a thin walled tube, which
is the most common type of copper tube used in homes. These tubes are used
mainly behind the walls to route water from the service line & water
heater to the fixtures. Trunk lines are generally run in 3/4-in. type M
copper with 1/2-in. Type M branching away to cater the individual fixtures.
Type K has the heaviest wall section of the four types of pressure rated
tubing. It is generally used for high pressure applications and deep
underground burial, such as - under sidewalks and streets, with a suitable
corrosion protection coating or continuous polyethylene sleeve as needed by
the code. Type K Tubes have found uses in all sorts of buildings, from the
smallest to the largest, but especially in areas where the water is highly
corrosive.
Type K tubes come in sizes ranging from 3/8" to 12" and have
approximately the same thickness as that of iron pipe after it has been
threaded. Type K copper tubing has a high bursting pressure, which is more
than 5,000 lbs. per sq. inch.
