A
vertical element, a column is that part of a structure whose purpose is
to compress the weight of the structure. Steel columns have seen an
increased usage in building structures throughout the world. Derived
from a multi-step manufacturing process, steel columns are used to
distribute loads over a supporting pier, wall or foundation, while
constructing commercial or residential buildings. Steel provide high
temperature stability, highly inert deactivated inner surface and
exceptional mechanical durability to the column.
Steel columns are being increasingly used for structural applications,
due to its aesthetic appearance, high corrosion resistance, ease of
maintenance and ease of construction. They are perfect for field use or
high vibration situations, as these columns cannot break. These heavily
loaded columns are used in multi-storey buildings to support beams or
arches and in the design of other civil engineering structures, which
employ composite design techniques.
