Mild Steel For Household and Industrial Application
The mild steel pipes contains very less quantity of carbon. The carbon
content in mild steel is 0.18% or less in some cases. Carbon is the
hardening component in steel and due to less carbon content, the mild steel
pipe is relatively softer and can be molded easily. It can be easily
fabricated and also affordable than the rest metals. The life expectancy is
shorter than the hard steel but with proper care it can last for 60 to 100
years. It should be protected from rusting.
The
mild steel pipe is generally
coated with copper to resist corrosion. It is used for drinking water supply
in houses, the clorination restricts the corrosion on the wall of the pipe.
It is mostly used in domestic general applications. Many home appliances are
made from mild steel. The usages broadens to making of ship sides to low
carbon steel wire and tin plates. The common home appliances made of mild
steel are - cutlery, pens, file cabinets, decorative items etc. Believe it
or not, even mild steel is used for making bullets. The yield points of the
mild steel can resist the bullet heat caused due to high speed and friction.
Mild steel is relatively
cheaper than the hard steel and is preffered by manufacturers for making
industrial use products. Some of the products frequently used in various
indutries are - steel structural plates, forgings, stampings etc. Also it is
used for transmitting substances such as gas and oil.
