Hollow
steel pipes are mostly available in rectangular and square shape however, it
is available in cylindrical and triangular as well. These hollow steel pipes
are used in various industries vigorously. The magnitude of the wall
thickness of these hollow steel pipes vary from application to application.
The advantage of the hollow steel tubes and pipes lies in their trimming
process. Comparing to concrete floats, hollow tubes and pipes are much
lighter and is of multiple use. The hollow tubes can be also trimmed easily
by using ballast. This trimming process continues until the stability and
drought are not achieved. Hollow steel pipes and tubes have very high
strength. These are specially used in the construction industry and is
durable.
The cylindrical hollow pipes are used as line pipes for energy supply -
oil, gas, water and other combustible liquids. The rectangular or the square
tubes are widely used in structural buildings, domestic use such as
racks/shelves, trailers however, mostly for building frameworks. With the
same weight, a hollow pipe is stronger than the solid pipes or tubes
however, with the same diameter a solid one is stronger. Since per unit
weight of the hollow tubes are stronger than the solid pipes, the hollow
tubes are also used as bridge piers by buckling. For more ductility of the
piers FRP jacketing technique is been used. The inner of the hollow tube is
filled with concrete core to strengthen whereas, the outer remains well
protected with the FRP jacketing.
