What is ERW Pipe & Why ERW Steel Pipes

ERW
means Electric Resistance Welded. The ERW pipes are the pipes which are made
from hot rolled steel strips. The hot strips are then put into a furnace
which rolls them and welded longitudinal across the length. So, the ERW pipe
has cross-sectional welded joints. Earlier, seamless pipe was more preferred
than the ERW. In fact, erw pipes were considered the third grade however,
due to improved technology, both the production and export has increased
sharply. Different materials are used to make ERW pipes however, steel is
considered to be the most ideal material.
ERW steel pipes can be either threaded end or plain. The highest quality is
manufactured by continuous-cast steel with lowest carbon content which
ensures best corrosion resistance, superior toughness and smooth surface
finish.
ERW steel pipes are cost
effective comparing to the seamless steel pipes thus, for large scale
industrial application ERW pipes are being used to maintain costing. And
also due to shortage of seamless pipes, erw pipes are being used as
substitute in various application.
The standard of ERW steel pipes conform the internationally accepted norms.
The classification is done on basis of size, wall thickness, dimension and
nominal bore. Some of the internationally accepted standards are - IS, BS,
ASTM etc. These high quality pipes are ideal for using in heavy duty
industrial applications. ERW steel pipes can be seen in applications like
structural building, gas & sewage lines, agricultural irrigation, steel
boiler etc. These
pipes are suitable for both light and
heavy duties. Currently the statistical data confirm that, ERW steel pipes
caught a total share of 48%.
